Endocrinology Care in Hatillo
Where Understanding Meets Care

Meet Dr. Sheila S. Mercado Méndez, Board-Certified Endocrinologist

Puerto Rico carries one of the highest rates of diabetes in the United States, and thyroid and metabolic conditions here are just as common — and far more often missed. I am board-certified in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism, and I opened EndoInnova in Hatillo so north-coast patients wouldn’t have to drive to the metro area for specialist care.

Most patients arrive having managed a condition for years without anyone explaining it to them. That’s where my consultations begin. Before we discuss treatment, I want you to understand your labs, your symptoms, and how diabetes, thyroid function, and weight connect to each other — because they almost always do.

I am also introducing InBody body composition testing, which measures muscle, body fat, and visceral fat separately, so progress is tracked by what’s actually changing rather than by scale weight alone.

Guiding Our Care Forward

Puerto Rico’s north coast has long carried more diabetes, thyroid, and metabolic disease than it has specialists to treat it. These two commitments shape how we’re closing that gap.

Mission

Specialist Endocrine Care, Without the Drive to San Juan

EndoInnova exists so patients in Hatillo, Arecibo, Camuy, Manatí, and Quebradillas can see a board-certified endocrinologist near home. Dr. Sheila S. Mercado Méndez evaluates diabetes, thyroid, obesity, and hormonal conditions in a single consultation — in Spanish or English — so nothing gets missed between three separate referrals.

Vision

A Complete Metabolic Picture, Not Just a Number

Too many endocrine conditions are tracked by weight alone, which hides what’s actually changing. We’re expanding the clinic’s diagnostic capability — including InBody body composition analysis measuring muscle, body fat, and visceral fat separately — so treatment decisions rest on real metabolic data rather than the scale.

A Trusted Educational Resource for Our Patients

Understanding Diabetes, Not Just Managing It

Puerto Rico has one of the highest diabetes rates under the U.S. flag. Education on type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, insulin therapy, and glucose monitoring with Dr. Sheila S. Mercado Méndez.
    • Learn what your A1C actually measures and why it differs from daily glucose readings.
    • Understand how meals, sleep, stress, and activity move your numbers hour to hour.
    • Know the difference between type 1, type 2, and prediabetes — and why treatment differs.
    • Learn how insulin works in the body and why timing matters as much as dose.
    • Understand what continuous glucose monitoring shows that finger-sticks cannot.
    • Recognize the early warning signs worth calling the clinic about, not waiting out.

Why Weight Is a Medical Question, Not a Willpower One

Education on obesity, insulin resistance, and body composition — including how thyroid and hormonal factors influence weight that will not shift with diet alone.
    • Understand why obesity is classified as a chronic medical condition, not a lifestyle failure.
    • Learn how insulin resistance drives weight gain and why it often goes undiagnosed.
    • Know what BMI does and does not tell you about your actual metabolic health.
    • Understand the difference between muscle, body fat, and visceral fat on a body composition report.
    • Learn why thyroid and hormonal conditions must be ruled out before weight treatment begins.
    • Understand how GLP-1 and other medications are evaluated on an individual clinical basis.

Reading Your Thyroid Results With Clarity

Education on hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, Hashimoto’s disease, and thyroid nodules — for patients whose symptoms have been dismissed as normal.

    • Learn what TSH, T4, T3, and thyroid antibodies each indicate about your gland.
    • Understand why symptoms can persist even when lab results are called normal.
    • Know how thyroid function influences weight, energy, mood, heart rate, and fertility.
    • Learn why levothyroxine absorption depends on timing, food, and other medications.
    • Understand what a thyroid nodule is and when imaging or biopsy is warranted.
    • Recognize how autoimmune thyroid disease progresses and what to monitor over time.

Book With a Board-Certified Endocrinologist in Hatillo

Most endocrine conditions are caught late because the early signs — fatigue, weight that won’t move, changes in appetite or mood — get explained away for years. A consultation with Dr. Sheila S. Mercado Méndez puts a specialist’s eyes on them.

Evaluations for diabetes, thyroid, obesity, and metabolic concerns are available now in Spanish and English. InBody body composition analysis is coming to the clinic soon.
